2026 COMPARISON

Best hardware wallets in 2026

In short: the best hardware wallet depends on what you hold and how you use it. For maximum isolation, NGRAVE ZERO is fully air-gapped and runs the only EAL7-certified operating system on a hardware wallet. Ledger Flex suits everyday DeFi, Trezor Safe 5 is the open-source value pick, COLDCARD Q is for Bitcoin-only power users, Keystone 3 Pro is the most affordable air-gapped option, BitBox02 Nova is the simplest Swiss-made choice, and Tangem is the easiest card wallet.

How we compared

Disclosure: NGRAVE makes the ZERO. We compared every wallet on the same criteria, list ZERO's trade-offs alongside the others', and took every specification from the manufacturer's own website (checked October 2026).

Isolation

Does the wallet ever need a cable, Bluetooth or NFC to sign? A fully air-gapped wallet signs through QR codes or a memory card only.

Certification

Which Common Criteria level the secure element or operating system has reached. EAL7 is the highest.

Open source

Whether you can inspect the firmware yourself.

Backup

How you recover your funds if the device is lost or destroyed.

Coins and apps

Which assets and third-party wallets it works with.

Price

The best hardware wallets in 2026

Seven wallets, each the strongest pick for a different kind of buyer.

NGRAVE ZERO

Best for maximum isolation. ZERO never connects to anything: no USB data, Bluetooth, NFC or Wi-Fi. You sign by scanning QR codes, so a compromised computer or phone can't reach the private keys. Its custom operating system is the only one on a hardware wallet certified to EAL7. It adds a 4" touchscreen, a fingerprint sensor and IP55 water and dust resistance, works with MetaMask and Rabby, and is made in Belgium. Good for: large holdings, long-term storage, anyone who wants no connection at all. Trade-offs: the most expensive wallet here; firmware isn't open source yet; fewer native blockchains than Ledger or Trezor.

Ledger Flex

Best for everyday DeFi. An EAL6+ secure element, a large E Ink touchscreen and Bluetooth, so it pairs easily with the Ledger Wallet app on a phone. It supports the widest ecosystem of coins and third-party wallets. Good for: frequent transactions, many assets, mobile use. Trade-offs: connects over USB, Bluetooth and NFC; the operating system and secure-element firmware are closed source.

Trezor Safe 5

Best open-source value. Open-source firmware, an EAL6+ secure element, a colour touchscreen and Shamir backup at $129. A Bitcoin-only edition is available. Trezor's newer Safe 7 ($249) adds Bluetooth and a larger screen. Good for: users who want to inspect the code, beginners on a budget. Trade-offs: USB-C connection, not air-gapped; limited on iPhone.

COLDCARD Q

Best for Bitcoin-only power users. A Bitcoin-only wallet with a full keyboard, QR camera and microSD slots, so it can run completely air-gapped. Advanced features include multisig, Seed XOR and dice-roll entropy. Good for: experienced Bitcoin holders, multisig setups. Trade-offs: Bitcoin only; steeper learning curve; no companion app.

Keystone 3 Pro

Most affordable air-gapped wallet. Like ZERO, Keystone 3 Pro signs through QR codes and has a 4" touchscreen and fingerprint sensor, at a lower price. It works with many third-party wallets. Good for: air-gapped signing on a budget. Trade-offs: no published Common Criteria certificate for the device.

BitBox02 Nova

Simplest Swiss-made wallet. Open-source firmware, an EAL6+ secure element and a microSD backup during setup. Bluetooth support makes it work with iPhone. Good for: a simple, minimal wallet; Bitcoin-only users (dedicated edition). Trade-offs: small screen; connects over USB-C or Bluetooth.

Tangem

Easiest card wallet. An NFC card you tap against your phone, with no screen or battery, from $54.90. Backup is a second or third card; a seed phrase is optional. Good for: beginners, small amounts, mobile-only users. Trade-offs: no screen to verify transactions on the device; depends on your phone for every signature.

How to choose

Start from how you hold and use your crypto, not from the brand.

Holding a large amount for years?

Choose a fully air-gapped wallet: NGRAVE ZERO, Keystone 3 Pro or COLDCARD Q.

Trading or using DeFi often?

Ledger Flex or Trezor Safe 5 connect faster. ZERO and Keystone also work with MetaMask and Rabby through QR codes.

Bitcoin only?

COLDCARD Q, or the Bitcoin-only editions of Trezor Safe 5 and BitBox02.

Want to read the code?

Trezor Safe 5 or BitBox02.

Just starting with a small amount?

Tangem or Trezor Safe 5.

Whatever you choose

Buy only from the manufacturer or an official reseller, and keep your backup offline, ideally on steel rather than paper.

Hardware wallet

FAQ

  • What is the most secure hardware wallet?

Security depends on isolation, certification and backup. NGRAVE ZERO is fully air-gapped and runs the only EAL7-certified operating system on a hardware wallet. Other strong options are COLDCARD Q and Keystone 3 Pro, which can also sign without any cable or wireless connection.

  • What does air-gapped mean?

An air-gapped wallet never connects to a computer or phone by cable, Bluetooth or NFC to sign transactions. It exchanges data through QR codes or a memory card, so malware on your other devices can't reach your private keys.

  • What is EAL7?

EAL (Evaluation Assurance Level) is the Common Criteria security certification scale, from EAL1 to EAL7. EAL7 is the highest level and requires a formally verified design. Most hardware wallets use a secure element certified to EAL5+ or EAL6+.

  • Is a hardware wallet worth it for small amounts?

Yes, if you'd be upset to lose the amount. A low-cost wallet such as Tangem or Trezor Safe 5 already keeps your keys off your phone and computer.

  • What happens if I lose my hardware wallet?

You restore your funds from your backup — a recovery phrase, Shamir shares, backup cards or, for NGRAVE ZERO, the GRAPHENE steel plates. Without a backup, the funds can't be recovered.
