What’s Your Crypto Future?

Crosschain Commuter

You’re getting the hang of things, but it’s time to tighten your security. You’ve made progress with self-custody, but hopping between multiple wallets and chains can create vulnerabilities. As you continue expanding your crypto activity, ensure that you have consistent, strong protections in place across all platforms. Consider integrating following tips to enhance your security.

So what should you do?

Step 1: Check If Your Email & Passwords Have Been Leaked

  • Visit Have I Been Pwned to check if your credentials are compromised.
  • If any accounts are breached, change passwords immediately and use a password manager.

Step 2: Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) Everywhere

  • US residents can use tools like Efani to prevent SIM swaps and targeted attacks on your mobile communications.
  • If not, use an authenticator app (like Google Authenticator) instead of SMS for added security.

Step 3: Use a Secure Browser for Crypto Activities

  • Avoid Chrome—it’s commonly targeted by malware. Instead, use Brave for built-in privacy and security.

Step 4: Bookmark Official Sites

  • Phishing sites look identical to real ones. Avoid clicking links from search engines—bookmark the real site instead.

Step 5: Double-Check Every Character When Transferring Crypto

  • Scammers use lookalike addresses! Always copy-paste & double-check before sending large amounts.
  • Send a small test transaction first to confirm the destination address.

Step 6: Revoke Risky Token Approvals

  • DeFi dApps request “infinite approval”, meaning they can drain all your tokens if hacked.
  • Use Etherscan Token Approval Checker to remove permissions you no longer need.

Step 7: Be Extra Cautious With Bridges

  • Cross-chain bridges are high-value targets for hackers. Use only audited & reputable ones.
  • Avoid clicking on random bridge links from Discord or X—always go directly to the official website.
  • Before using any dApp or DeFi protocol, check for independent security audits from firms like Hacken to reduce the risk of interacting with vulnerable or malicious contracts.

Step 8: Use Separate Wallets for Trading & Long-Term Holdings

  • Hot wallets (MetaMask, Rabby, Trust Wallet) are convenient but not secure for large holdings.
  • Create a dedicated wallet for trading and DeFi interactions. Keep long-term holdings in a separate, secure, hardware wallet.

Step 9: Upgrade to a Hardware Wallet

  • Hardware wallets store your private keys offline, keeping them safe from hacks.
  • The majority of your portfolio should be in a hardware wallet, and only keep a small amount in your hot wallet for active trading.

Step 10: Store Your Seed Phrase Properly

  • NEVER store it on your phone, email, or cloud storage!
  • Use a steel backup for fire, water, and rust-proof storage
  • Never share your seed phrase. A reputable company will never ask for your seed phrase. If someone does, they’re almost certainly impersonating a trusted service or brand.
